What’s your blog name?
When did you start blogging and why?
I was at college studying for a BTEC ND when my tutor (a really inspirational guy) had just started a blog and recommended that I should try it too, to put my design work out into the world. That was in 2009, and 7 years on I’m still posting. I couldn’t imagine my life without blogging now and am really grateful for the opportunities it has brought me. I know it’s not for everyone, but I think it’s important for creative students to have a blog – I wouldn’t have secured my first graduate job without mine!
Was there a particular blog that inspired you to start?
Well, my tutor’s I guess. At the time I didn’t really know about blogs – for a long time I was just blogging in my own little world and didn’t find the community until a lot later down the line. I remember that the first blog I really followed was llymlrs.com – at the time she was a Graphic Design student posting her design work with some fashion, but now she’s primarily a fashion blogger. I still follow her though!
How do you curate your content?
My content comes quite easily because it’s just things that I have experienced or been inspired by. I try to have a mix of personal, advice and inspiration posts but if I’m being honest (which I do try to be) I don’t plan too far in advance as I like things to be fresh and relevant. Maybe that makes me a bad blogger, but it seems to work for me anyway…
Where do you find inspiration?
Everywhere. Honestly, I know that’s so cheesy but it’s true. It could be some nice typography in Borough Market, a poster I see in a shop window or from a discussion I have with a friend. I’m naturally quite a curious person and love learning, so I’m always trying to push myself to find new places/things. Then I share it with my readers and hopefully either inspire them or spark a conversation.
How do you stay motivated?
As a creative I feel quite lucky to be spurred on by inspiration. I enjoy writing and discussions, so anything that I feel passionate about comes easily. A lot of people ask me how I find the time to go out and do things around London, but I like to explore and when I pay so much to live here, I think it’s important to get out there and enjoy the city! Reading other blogs also keeps me motivated too – I love being a part of the small, but amazing creative community.
Which blogs do you read regularly?
Oh! SO many – how long have you got? Ha! My favourites include Found Some Paper, The Creative Outlook and Cardboard Cities. These ladies are all super talented, creative and interesting – go follow them.
How long does it take to write a blog post?
I think I’m quite slow when it comes to creating posts – this is the perfectionist in me. I go through several stages; brainstorming ideas, writing initial thoughts, researching, writing a draft, taking photos, editing photos, putting it all together. Then I let it settle for a couple of days before I read it again, and after a final edit, then it’s ready for the world to see. I put a lot of heart into my posts – I hope that shows? ha
How do you promote your posts?
Social Media is my best friend. I love it. I love chatting to people, joining in debates and find that it really helps to create a buzz around my posts too. Twitter is the main platform that I use for promoting my posts – I schedule several for the day that a post is going live because I work 9-5, but try to check in with any engagement on my lunch and if I get 5 minutes spare.
How did you grow your social media following?
I don’t really know. It’s just been a natural growth really. Sure, I have been featured/mentioned a few times so that helps, but mainly it’s been through the conversations and common interests. I know that my blog is quite niche, and so it won’t appeal to everyone, but I think this strengthens my little community. If they follow me then I know they must have a real interest in what I post about, which helps me connect with them. I feel really lucky having amazing followers.
Which is your favourite social media platform?
I think that because I’m a creative/ visual person most people would assume Instagram to be my favourite, however I love Twitter. Recently I’ve been trying to get more into Instagram and Youtube though. I’ve been posting to Instagram every day, working to improve my photography and hashtagging game. And on Youtube – I think there’s a bit of a gap for creatives making videos and would love to see more doing it! I started in December and am really loving the challenge. But, yes, Twitter is my favourite for sure because I just love to chat… incase you hadn’t already gathered!
